Australia is sending more troops and two patrol boats to the troubled Solomon Islands.

The contingent of 25 airfield defence guards adds to about 240 Australian soldiers and 330 police in the Pacific nation in the wake of last week's rioting in the capital Honiara.

The Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says the extra forces will send a strong message to criminal elements in the Solomons.

And Dr Nelson says the extra forces are critical this week, as the Solomons parliament has its first sitting under the new Prime Minister Snyder Rini.

Another 55 New Zealand troops are also expected to arrive in the Solomons this weekend.
