The blasts were almost simultaneous and came as the stores were packed with shoppers stocking up for the Orthodox Christian Easter celebrations.

The supermarkets are about a kilometre apart in the city of Kharkiv.

Ukraine's interior ministry said it appeared that the blasts were caused by homemade bombs.

The motive for the attacks is unclear but disputes between business rivals have in the past turned violent.
