The Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has confirmed the widow of an Australian soldier killed in Iraq will have a say in the inquiry into the matter.

The 25-year-old man was part of the force providing security for Australian
government staff working in Baghdad.

It's believed he accidentally shot himself in the head while cleaning his gun.

Dr Nelson says an inquiry will be held into the death and the man's widow has been invited to help draft the terms of reference.

And the minister says these arrangements have been agreed to in consultation with the head of the Australian army, General Peter Leahy.
