Kidney Health Australia is calling for a nationwide ban on soft drinks in schools.
The Victorian Government announced today it would phase out soft drinks in state schools by the end of the year.
Kidney Health says one can of sugary drink a day increases the risk of diabetes among females by 80 per cent.
Victoria's Education Minister, Lynne Kosky, says a new Government survey suggests one in three of the state's teenagers are drinking two cans every day.
"All of the research points to the fact that our children need to develop healthy eating habits," she said.
The most recent research, which I found very alarming, is not good enough for our children, and schools can play their part in educating our children."
