The body of Private Jacob Kovco is on its way back to Australia from Iraq, where he died on Friday from a gunshot wound to the head.

Private Kovco will be honoured in an Anzac Day ceremony in his Victorian home town of Briagolong, in Gippsland, tomorrow.

Military officials say the 25-year-old father of two, a trained sniper, accidentally shot himself while cleaning his pistol.

The commander of Australian forces in the Middle East, Brigadier Paul Simon, says this will be a difficult time for the Australian contingent in Iraq.

"It's quite clear, talking to his mates, that, you know, they loved him. And they're dealing with his loss very, very well. But, of course, this Anzac Day is going to be very difficult for those fellows," he said.

"There's no doubt about that. They're going to focus on Jake and the life of Jake.

"And they're going to focus on their battalion and the security detachment that is there in the international zone. And it'll be very internal."
