Cyclone Monica, losing intensity as it approaches Darwin, has been downgraded from a Category 5 cyclone to Category 2.

The cyclone passed across Maningrida on the coast of Arnhem Land last night and Jabiru in the Kakadu National Park, with no apparent casualties.

It forced the cancellation of today's Anzac Day dawn service and march in Darwin.

Bill Buckley of the Northern Territory Emergency Service says the main concern now is not the wind but the rain.

"There's no danger to Darwin. The cyclone came across land during the night. It was downgraded very quickly to a Category 2. It is still classed as a Category-2 storm."

"It is heading now towards the Adelaide River area, which is around about 100 kilometres south of Darwin." Mr Buckley said

"The communities it has passed have sustained very little damage. So we are not expecting too much damage but a lot of rain. Probably flooding is our main problem now."
