Police are reportedly furious that a murder suspect held in Villawood Detention Centre for two years avoided detection, then was released without a full identity check.
Immigration officials failed to fingerprint Tuan Dang Nguyen and granted him a temporary protection visa without a police check.
He was finally arrested in Sydney last week and has been extradited to Victoria.
Police believe he took on a false identity, which led to him being detained as an unlawful citizen.
Tuan Dang Nguyen is wanted for the murder of two women in Robinvale, north of Melbourne, in April 2001.
