A leading businessman has called for an end to dual citizenship, likening it to having a mental illness.
Hugh Morgan has told a Deakin University audience in Melbourne that citizenship is one of the most important elements of personal identity.
He says dual nationality splits loyalties and is like the beginning of bipolar disorder.
His comments have angered the migrant community and those involved in mental health.
Abd Malak, honorary president of the Federation of Ethnic Community Councils of Australia, works in mental health.
He says dual citizenship is good for the country.
"I think for him to call these people who have mental illness is not appropriate. It's not appropriate, it's hurting the people themselves."
"At the same time, it's hurting the mentally ill people, because it's feeding the stigma and the negative feeling about mental health. And that's not appropriate, not accepted."
