Five of the convicted Australian drug couriers from the so-called Bali Nine have had their life sentences reduced to 20 years after appealing.

Renae Lawrence, Tan Duc Tahnh Nguyen, Si Yi Chen, Matthew Norman and Michael Czugaj have won their appeals.

The deputy chief of the Bali High Court says the court reduced their sentences because they played minor roles in the heroin smuggling operation from Bali to Australia.

Another convicted courier, Martin Stephens, is still awaiting a decision on his appeal.

The High Court has already upheld death penalties for masterminds, Andrew Chan, and Myuran Sukumaran.

Another of the Bali Nine, Scott Rush, did not appeal against his life term.
