At least two people were killed, and several seriously injured, when a train and a truck collided in central Victoria.

Police say the two-carriage passenger train was travelling from Melbourne to Ararat Friday, when it hit the truck at a level crossing near the town of Beaufort.

The semi-trailer, which was carrying rocks, was struck at its back at a a level crossing, and the two-carriage train derailed.

Authorities says the train driver was seriously injured and flown to Melbourne for treatment.

Numerous passengers were treated at the Ballarat Base Hospital.

The driver of the truck survived the accident.
