The body of the first Australian solider killed in Iraq has begun its final journey home after a mistake that led to the wrong body being sent from Kuwait.
A senior army officer is going to head an inquiry into how the body of Private Jake Kovco was left in Kuwait and a different body flown to Melbourne.
The head of the defence force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, says the military is quickly assessing what went wrong.
He says that will provide the basis for the terms of reference for an inquiry to be conducted.
Air Chief Marshal Houston says Private Kovco's body is now expected to reach Melbourne tomorrow morning.
"We will treat Private Kovco with all the full military respect that you would normally see from the Australian army, and we will receive him in style when he arrives at Tullamarine Airport."
