A memorial service has been held at Port Arthur in Tasmania to mark the anniversary of the massacre there 10 years ago.
35 people were shot dead by gunman Martin Bryant, who is serving a life sentence in prison for the murders.
The anniversary has been an occasion for remembrance and reflection.
The chairman of the Port Arthur Management Authority, Barry Jones, says lives were darkened and optimism challenged by the events.
"The massacre reinforces our sense of outrage at the cruelty that humans are capable of. It also rekindles our admiration for the bravery and nobility of those who reacted to a sudden, life-shattering event on a glowing Sunday afternoon in a landscape of Arcadian beauty."
