Environmental groups and politicians have written to Foreign Minister Alexander Downer urging the federal government not to support any possible military action against Iran over its nuclear program.
The letter to Mr Downer describes any military action as being a catastrophe, and called on Australia to lobby the United States and the United Nations Security Council to rule out an attack.
The letter was signed by groups such as Friends of the Earth, and Greenpeace as well as several Labor and Democrat politicians.
The Democrats Deputy leader, Andrew Bartlett, says Australia must voice opposition to military action against Iran.
Mr Bartlett says Autralia, thanks to its improved relationship with the United States, can now have more influence in world politics.
