Police say they still don't know what led to the train crash in Victoria that left to two people dead and 40 injured yesterday afternoon.

A two-carriage passenger train was travelling from Melbourne to Ararat when it hit a truck at a level crossing near the town of Beaufort.

Detectives from the Victoria Police Transit Safety Division have interviewed the driver of a semitrailer involved in the fatal crash, and expect to speak to more people today.

While the support driver died, the train driver was airlifted to Alfred hospital in Melbourne and remains in a critical condition.

A V-Line spokeswoman says rail services from Ballarat to Ararat have been suspended and will be replaced by buses for at least a few days.
