Rescue crews are making slow progress on a tunnel in Beaconsfield gold mine in northern Tasmania to reach two men who have been trapped underground for almost three days.

Crews have dug about seven metres of the 36-metre-long tunnel overnight , to try to reach miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb.

The body of 44-year-old Larry Knight was retrieved from the northern Tasmanian mine on Thursday night.

All three men are believed to have been working in the same area when a seismic event triggered rock falls, almost one-thousand metres underground.

Australian Workers' Union national secretary Bill Shorten says progress on the tunnel is steady, but the earliest they expect to reach the men is Monday.
