The families of two men trapped in a Beaconsfield gold mine in northern Tasmania face more time waiting as rescue workers continue tunnelling to reach the miners.

Three men were trapped in the mine following seismic activity on Tuesday night, which triggered rock falls almost one-thousand metres underground.

The body of 44-year-old Larry Knight was retrieved from the northern Tasmanian mine on Thursday night.

It is not known whether 35-year-old Todd Russell or 37-year-old Brant Webb have survived the accident.

Rescuers are tunnelling in an attempt to reach the men, but are being forced to move slowly to prevent a further collapse, and are expected to reach the men on Monday.

The mine manager, Matthew Gill says 13 men are underground, involved in the dangerous operation to reach the area where Mr Russell and Mr Webb were working.

“We are all working as hard and as quickly as we can so that everyone knows as soon as possible, but we cannot rush this. We cannot risk more lives.” He said.
