New South Wales Premier, Morris Iemma has dismissed a suggestion that young Muslims are not joining the state police force because they feel unwanted.

A report today suggests just 24 of New South Wales' 15-thousand police officers are practising Muslims.

Mr Iemma says his government is considering establishing a taskforce to find ways of bringing more young Muslim people to the police force.

But the President of the Federation of Young Australian Muslim Students and Youth says the taskforce might be a waste of time.

Chabban Omran says while shortage is not due to racism within the force, it does need to be addressed.

Mr Omran says the best way to encourage young Muslims to join the police force is through community consultation.

“Create the usual awareness among these various schools in the south-west, if that's what they're targeting. But to set up a special taskforce appears to be reactionary and I don't think that's a good spending of taxpayers money.” Mr Omran said.
