The Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has called for speculations on the circumstances of the first death of an Australian soldier in Iraq to cease until the results of the inquiry are known.

Dr Nelson says the investigation will also look into why the body of Private Kovco was initially left behind in Kuwait.

Private Jake Kovco's body arrived to Sydney yesterday, after the coffin of another soldier arrived on Thursday.

Sniper Kovco was shot in the head in Baghdad, but it is still unknown whether it was a suicide, his own mistake or even a murder.

Dr Nelson says a board of inquiry into the death will be convened as soon as possible.

He says the board will be made of former New South Wales Coroner Warren Cook, former police commissioner in Queensland, Jim O'sullivan, and a military member.

Military investigators are currently in Baghdad undertaking their own investigations and collecting evidence.
