A leading business lobby group says a cut to personal income tax in next week's budget would help attract more skilled migrants to Australia.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says tax changes would help boost the economy, and support local businesses.

The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Commerce, Peter Hendy says the tax system is outdated, and needs fundamental changes.

Mr Hendy says reducing the top marginal tax rate would be a major incentive to bring more skilled migrants to the country.

“Having a competitive personal income system will help in that. It will be a vital economic tool to help get skilled people to come and work in Australia, and that's one of the reasons we want to see reform in the personal income tax system.” He said
