Operators of the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania have announced two miners trapped in a mine shaft for five days have been found alive.

Rescuers succeeded in reaching 35 year-old Todd Russell and 37 year-old Brant Webb, who were trapped nearly one kilometre underground.

It is not yet known what condition the two men are in.

The collapse of the mine shaft the two had been working in was triggered by a seismic event last week.

A third miner who had been trapped in the same accident, Larry Knight died last week, rescuers retrieved his body on Thursday.
