A funeral with full military honours for Private Jake Kovco is expected to take place in his home town of Briagolong in south-east Victoria tomorrow.
The New South Wales coroner, John Abernethy, has released the soldier's body for burial after its delayed arrival from Iraq.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Private Kovco, killed by a bullet from his own gun, are still subject to investigation.
The defence minister, Brendan Nelson, the head of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston, and the head of the army, Lieutenant-General Peter Leahy, will attend the funeral.
