The Refugee Council of Australia says it's disappointed that the federal government has decided not to increase its annual intake of refugees.

The federal government has announced the intake next financial year will remain at 13,000.

It says 6,000 places will go to refugees referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and 7,000 places will be allocated through the government's Special Humanitarian Program.

The President of the Refugee Council of Australia, John Gibson, says it would have been nice to have seen a increase in the intake.

"People who've fled their countries in search of safety and stability - it's our responsibility to help them rebuild their lives - that's a very important part of it, and so we know that department is very conscious of the need for greater community recognition and understanding of those that do arrive in this situation. It's very important that this program continues and with hopefully some luck, the numbers will increase in the future."
