People in the Pilbara region of north-west Australia are celebrating the 60th anniversary of a historic strike.
On May the 1st, 1946, more than 800 Aboriginal workers and their families walked off 27 pastoral stations.
The strike did not end officially until 1972, when the workers purchased Yandy Yarra station.
The Pilbara Language and Cultural Centre manager, Fran Haintz, says the week-long celebrations will raise awareness.
"Although the 1963 strike of the Gurinji is quite well-known nationally, people were not really well aware that Pilbara Aboriginal people in 1946 did a very strong act, and we're really hoping that, by us really working hard to push it, that it will nationally put this strike on the map, because I'll tell you that there are some really proud old people here who really deserve that recognition."
