Victoria's opposition leader, Robert Doyle, has announced he has resigned as Liberal Party leader.
Mr Doyle made the announcement in Melbourne following a meeting of Liberal M-Ps.
It follows a series of poor opinion polls and the loss of support from senior members of the Liberal Party and its M-Ps.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Doyle says the decision to resign was his and his alone.
"I have given 100 per cent. I have given my best. But I am nothing if not honest, and, looking at 100 per cent and giving my best, it was not enough."
He says; "So although it was a very tough decision, it is the correct decision for the parliamentary party and the Liberal Party for me to stand aside."
A special meeting of the party will be held on Monday, in which Mr Doyle's successor will be selected.
