The ordeal of two trapped miners in Tasmania may be over on the weekend, as a delicate rescue operation continues.

Rescuers have tunnelled to within a few metres of Todd Russell and Brant Webb.

A powerful mechanical drill is grinding a one-metre diameter rescue tunnel, from which rescue teams will then use hand drills to cut through to the two men.

Beaconsfield mine manager Matthew Gill says he cannot predict when the rescue team might reach the men, but says they are doing well despite spending their 11th night underground.

"It's just amazing, they're just in such good spirits, and they will go through ups and downs. They're OK physically. They actually have had icy-poles and they love that. Their menu is now expanding. We're looking at cereals and fresh fruit, so that's just going really well."
