A five-year-old Sydney girl who survived terrible burns when a car ploughed into her daycare centre almost three years ago is in a stable but critical condition after being hit by a car yesterday.
Sophie Delezio was being pushed in a pram across a pedestrian crossing outside her school in northern Sydney when she was hit.
This tragedy occurred after Sophie made a remarkable recovery from the 2003 accident, in which she lost both feet, some fingers and suffered third-degree burns to 85 percent of her body.
The hospital's acting executive director Dr Michael Brydon says the injuries she sustained yesterday are not as serious as originally thought.
"However, she is still very unwell. She is still in intensive care and is likely to be there for a couple of weeks. We are optimistic, though, that the injuries she sustained are unlikely to be life-threatening but they are very substantial injuries."
