Doctors treating a five-year-old girl hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing yesterday are confident she will recover from her injuries.

The accident comes just two years after Sophie Delezio lost both feet, some fingers and suffered third-degree burns to 85 percent of her body when a car ploughed into her day-care centre.

The hospital's acting executive director Dr Michael Brydon says the injuries she sustained yesterday are not as serious as originally thought.

“However, she is still very unwell. She is still in intensive care and is likely to be there for a couple of weeks. We are optimistic, though, that the injuries she sustained are unlikely to be life-threatening but they are very substantial injuries.”

Sophie's father, Ron Delezio says the accident has come just as Sophie was completing her recovery from the first accident.

“I couldn't believe that a serious accident could happen twice within a couple of years. he's just getting to a stage now where she's been free of operations for a number of months and she's started at school.

“I don't know whether it's bad luck or I've done something really bad in the past and it's catching up, but it's awful for her to go through such pain again.” Mr Delezio said.
