Australian officials have reacted with disappointment to news that two Solomon Islands politicians charged with inciting last month's riots in Honiara have been named as cabinet ministers.

Charles Dausabea and Nelson Ne'e were arrested by Australian police after the riots, and remanded in custody in jail.

Mr Dausabea has been named as police and national security minister, and Mr Ne'e will head the tourism and culture portfolio.

A spokeswoman for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs says the department is surprised and disappointed by the appointments.

The spokeswoman says James Batley, the special co-ordinator of the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomons will convey to the nation's new Government Australia's view that the appointments will jeopardise people's faith in the government.
