The Defence Minister, Brendan Nelson, says an inquiry will start soon into the death of the first Australian soldier in Iraq.
Private Jake Kovco died of a gunshot wound to the head last month while at the Australian barracks in Baghdad, but the exact circumstances of his death have not been made public.
Dr Nelson initially said Private Kovco had been cleaning his weapon and it accidentally discharged, but later retracted that statement.
The Defence Minister says the head of the inquiry will begin work this week: "The terms of reference have been discussed at some length with Mrs Shelley Kovco and also Private Kovco's mother, Judy Kovco. I'm advised that both of them are comfortable with composition of the Board of Inquiry, the timeline for the Board of Inquiry and its terms of reference".
He says he will also soon release details on how another body was originally sent back to Australia instead of Private Kovco's body.
