During the four day official visit, from May the 20th, Mr Howard will call on President Mary McAleese and hold talks with Prime Minister Bertie Ahern.

He will also address a joint session of Ireland's Dail (the lower house of parliament) and the upper house, the Senate.

A government statement said the visit will focus on strengthening the "historically close and increasingly dynamic relationship" between the two countries, particularly on economic matters.

"The visit will also afford an opportunity for a discussion of current regional and international issues of interest to both countries," the statement said.
