Doctors say two Tasmanian miners who were trapped underground for two weeks are in good physical condition, but may need some time to come to terms with the psychological effects of their ordeal.

Todd Russell (35) and Brant Webb (37) walked smiling and unaided from the mine shaft in which they had been confined.

The chief executive of the Launceston General Hospital, where the men were examined, Stephen Ayre, says the pair are in very good physical shape and in excellent spirits.

Dr Ayre says they will be monitored to make sure they continue to recover.

"I think the most likely issue is the psychological effects, but that will be closely monitored. They will have contact with a clinical counsellor. There will be advice from family and monitoring for mood swings that sort of thing and their sleep patterns. We will be watching all of that."
