A Launceston man is due in Hobart Magistrates Court today, charged with the attempted murder of a police officer who was shot after pulling over a motorist.

Sergeant Les Cooper was in a serious but stable condition in Royal Hobart Hospital last night after being shot at least three times.

It happened after he pulled over a motorist on the Midland Highway a kilometre north of Pontville yesterday morning.

Police say the 39-year-old accused man was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault and firearms offences.
