A Sydney man is being treated in an Israeli hospital after being shot in the head with a rubber bullet during a protest in the West Bank.

Phil Reiss was filming a protest in the West Bank town of Bilin against the construction of Israel's separation barrier.

Protest Group, the International Solidarity Movement says Israeli soldiers threw sound grenades and fired rubber coated bullets during the weekly demonstration, which injured seven people.

Israeli forces claim Mr Reiss was injured by a rock thrown by Palestinian protestors.

He is being treated in a Tel Aviv hospital where doctors say he's in a moderate, non-life-threatening condition.

Mr Reiss has described how he realised what had happened.

‘Some people sort of grabbed me, got me to sit down and said you've been shot. I sort of looked at my hands and there was blood all over my shirt and down my arms and I realised I'd been hit.’
