Prime Minister John Howard says there won't be any change to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, despite Australia is considering selling uranium to India.
Mr Howard was speaking in Washington, where he is visiting US President George W Bush, before he heads to Canada and Ireland.
The United States said it will begin selling uranium to India for civil nuclear energy projects, even though the Asian country hasn't signed up to the treaty.
Indian officials are hoping the US will persuade Mr Howard to allow Australia, which has the world's largest uranium reserves, to do the same.
But Mr Howard has told reporters in Washington that Australia is not planning to ask for the treaty to be changed to allow sales to go ahead.
However he has predicted there will be much debate in Australia about the issue in coming months.
