Young drivers in Western Australia will face a curfew as part of changes aimed at cutting the state's road toll.

From July next year, P-Plate drivers with less than six months experience will be banned from driving after midnight and have a limit on the number of passengers in their car.

Western Australia's Police Minister, John Kobelke says the changes have been recommended by the Road Safety Council, and will now be the toughest in the country.

163 people died on the roads in Western Australia last year.
