Jose Ramos Horta claimed he had not been notified that two Australian warships were put on standby in the event of further unrest in Timor Leste.

Dr Horta says a conversation with the Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has helped clear up the situation.

“I spoke this morning with Foreign Minister Alexander Downer who explained to me, and I completely understand and accept the explanation. And actually we should thank Australia for showing concern.” Dr Horta said.

Mr Downer says the troops from H-M-A-S Kanimbla and Manoora and will only be deployed if the Timorese government requests Australian assistance.
