Two navy warships are being positioned in Australia's northern borders, ahead of this weeks meeting of Timorese ruling party.

The defence forces are on standby to evacuate Australian's in case of renewed violence, amid growing pressure for Timorese Prime Minister, Mari Alkatari to resign.

Mr Vaile claims it’s a precautionary measure.

“Anything could happen. We have seen some violence on the streets, particularly in Dilli in recent weeks. But we believe needed to take some precautionary measures, in case we are asked for assistance.”

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, John Howard has defended his decision to put two navy warships on standby without consulting the Timorese government.
