One of the Prime Minister John Howard's strongest supporters has expressed his support for the Treasurer, Peter Costello to take over the nation's top political job.
The comments come amid speculation in News Limited newspapers that Mr Howard might retire in December.
North Queensland M.P. Peter Lindsey, says he has heard nothing specific, but if true he believes Mr Costello would be ideal for the job.
