New South Wales police say a post-mortem examination will be performed tomorrow to establish the cause of death - and the identity - of a young man found dead in a Sydney park.

The man, believed to be aged in his 20s, was found by two people in the early hours of this morning in a park in Lakemba, in Sydney's southwest.

Police say the victim is of Middle Eastern appearance, and had suffered a single gunshot wound to the back.

Superintendent Geoff Allen says at this stage, police know very little about the incident.

"We are unsure at the moment as to what caused the wound.

"We don't know who he is and we have forensic police down there at the moment combing the area, trying to find as information as they can."
