The group of men and boys said they feared they would be tortured if they were returned to their homeland and had vowed to starve themselves to death unless they were allowed to stay in Ireland.

The Irish government had refused to negotiate on the asylum claims and said the group had not yet exhausted the legal appeals process.

Eight minors were made wards of court.

Irish police removed the youngest first and then escorted the adults from the building, some of whom had to be carried on stretchers, apparently exhausted after a week of refusing food and in some cases water.
