The special international study on social issues was conducted by Roy Morgan International.

It found 69 percent of Australians aged 14 and over agree with the statement that Aboriginal culture is an essential component of Australian society.

That figure is up five per cent from 64 per cent in a similar poll done in 2000.

By comparison, only 58 per cent of New Zealanders agreed that Maori culture is an essential component of New Zealand society.

Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders account for two per cent of the Australian population.

Maori people, meanwhile, account for 15 per cent of New Zealand's population.
