At least one miner was killed and 11 others were trapped underground when part of a coal mine collapsed in north-western Turkey.

The Anatolia news agency quoted local governor Selahattin Hatipoglu as saying the accident happened in a mine in the village of Odakoy in Balikesir province.

A gallery of the mine, in which the dozen miners were working at the time, collapsed for an as yet unexplained reason, he was quoted as saying.

Emergency services and ambulances were rushed to the scene, he said.
