Bomb-making equipment was also seized in a series of raids, in what Canadian officials said was the largest intelligence operation ever undertaken in the country.

All the suspects are believed to be Canadian residents.

At a heavily-guarded court hearing, Canadian intelligence officials alleged the men had chosen a "violent ideology inspired by al-Qaeda".

The imam of a Toronto mosque said he knew most of the accused and denied they were involved in terrorism.
