Members of parliament officially recognised the result of a referendum held two weeks ago, in which a majority voted to end the union with Serbia.
Earlier this week, Montenegro's Referendum Commission formally confirmed the referendum result with 55.5 per cent of the public voted to secede, above the necessary threshold of 55 per cent.
Serbia is now expected to declare its own independence, bringing to an end the break-up of the former Yugoslavia, which had existed since the end of the First World War.
