The middle-aged man’s name will not be released until the family has been officially informed, mine management said.

The company said in a statement that the man was crushed while performing a maintenance task at the workshop of the mine’s contractor company, Starwest Constructions, in the mining town of Tabubil.

The accident is being investigated by the country’s mine department. An independent assessor from Australia, flown in by the mine operators, will also investigate the cause of the accident and review safety procedures.

Starwest employs around 400 workers, including 20 Australian expatriates. Employees are being counselled following the accident.
