The Cairns doctor Caroline De Costa has received approval from the Therapeutic Goods Administration to import 50 pills from New Zealand.

Doctor De Costa says she could receive the first shipment of the drug within days, and hopes to be treating patients by July.

She says it’s the first step in making chemical abortion more widely available in Australia.

“I have set about this process because I think that Australian women should be able to make the choice about using this drug. What I would hope we have done is to establish the precedent - to establish the view in the T.G.A that the drug is safe, it is effective, it should be available to women nationally,” she said.
