The Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils and SBS Student Journalism Award aims to encourage excellence and fairness in reporting into issues related to multiculturalism and diversity.

The joint award for 2005 year goes to University of Newcastle student, Phillip Thompson.

The judges praised Mr Thompson's skill in using a chilling experience to weave an illuminating story of an African refugee's contribution to advocacy and leadership in Australia.

Mr Thompson will receive a cheque for one thousand dollars from FECCA and a six week work placement with SBS.
