The federal government says the ACT law is at odds with the Marriage Act, which confirms that marriage is between a man and a woman.

But in a meeting at Government House, Speaker, Wayne Berry, presented Governor-General, Michael Jeffery, with a two-page motion passed by the assembly.

The motion says that while the ACT parliament disagrees with the federal government's move to block the civil unions bill, it would consider any amendments recommended by the governor general.
