The Newspoll survey of 1200 people found 82 per cent of respondents are in favour of the government regulating food and drink promotion.

The Federal Health Minister, Tony Abbott, has resisted pressure from health and consumer groups, saying advertisers are already responding to community concern and it is the responsibility of parents to give their children healthy food.

But Greens leader, Senator Bob Brown, says those arguments make no sense.
“If Tony Abbott can create a world in which all parents are watching what they see on television and commenting on it as it goes, then he might have an argument. Meantime, we're in an obesity epidemic. Up to half of Australian kids will be overweight by the year 2020. A quarter of them are already,” Senator Brown said.
