The 240-strong task-force will begin work in Afghanistan in July as part of an increased NATO-led force taking over operations in the country's increasingly violent southern regions.

But Lieutenant Colonel Mick Ryan says his troops will build much-needed infrastructure and help train local people in the skills to continue the work themselves.

“We'll be doing a whole range of tasks, from developing local infrastructure, but one of the most important tasks we'll be undertaking is investing in the future of Afghanistan by training the locals in basic skills such as carpentry and masonry to start with, and making sure that when we leave, we leave something behind that the locals can use forever on,” Lt Col Ryan said.
